Although, I know a thesis is something you write for a grade, I agree with it. I own a business with my husband and even in this economy, we are thriving. We are property preservationist and make money off of people losing their homes to foreclosure, a sign of our economy. I believe most women, including me, would like to raise their children, instead of letting daycare do it. Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to support a family on one income. I will vote for McDonnell.

This Saturday, August 22nd, volunteers from across the country will be donating their time to help support Bob McDonnell for Governor. We will be placing calls into Virginia to show our support for Bob McDonnell. We know that Bob will make a great governor. He stands for the solid conservative principles that we all believe in. Our goal is to make 10,000 phone calls for Bob McDonnell this Saturday and we would like to invite you to join us. The phone calls are easy to make from your own location and complete information on how to make the calls is provided. If you would like to join us and commit to making 25 calls for McDonnell this Saturday, please RSVP for our Nationwide Phone Bank Party!

To answer the merit pay responses--how does one find tangible standards upon which to measure a teacher? SOL's will be utilized but many teachers are NOT SOL scheduled as they teach electives such as CTE and Technology coursework. Kids are not widgets and their brains cannot be turned on and off? I lived and worked in England and they chose that route with respect to the schools. What happened when one was asked to raise their London A Level achievements by 28%? Well, lots of cheating regarding administration and teachers put under pressure.

As for the fact that good teachers would do their best anyway? Yes, we do! I am usually the first one in school at 6:30 am and among the last to leave at 4-to 6 pm daily? However, much pressure is put on getting all schools accredited in a district now and it will only get worse? Education is not like industry? To improve education one has to do the following:

1. Increase standards for ALL students such as requiring everyone to take final exams in all subject areas. Do not exclude students who pass SOL exams to be removed from the subject final exams. SOL's for the most part are very easy and the students see the testing as the top they must achieve????

2. Raise (not lower as many systems are doing) the 90% A to 94% A level across Virginia so that all students can be competitive.

3. Put a statewide ATTENDANCE law into affect whereas parents are responsible for children who miss more than 3 full days of school without illness per year to pay a decent fine or require them to attend school with their child as other states are doing. Currently, most systems allow a consecutive 15 days upon which the students can attend 1 day and then start the 15 all over? Get the teenagers to the school and keep them in the building?

4. Get rid of SOL tests completely and let the creative, competitive teacher shine in the same way a good businessman shines with profits in the marketplace?

5. Start the school day in Virginia at no earlier than 8:30 am for middle and high school. With several degrees under my belt research has proven that this age cannot function due to their natural growth process so 1.5 classes each day are absolutely a waste of time (Period 1 & 2, of Block 1 & 2).

6. Require all middle and high schools to provided online access by parents and students to their grades on a weekly basis throughout the state as they do in both Prince William and Stafford Counties.

7. Provide distance learning so that all schools systems in Virginia can access the best teachers no matter where they are located in Virginia as this will customize education to fit the needs of the diverse student body we teach. Many students are held back in classrooms that are under their ability because they have to be in a seat somewhere so they get board and disrupt the class sessions. Others, just sit as they are way past the material being present while others need remedial or one-to-one teaching a teacher cannot extend in modern day courses?

8. Keep the class size to no more than 24 students with less in higher level or special courses?

9. Develop a special ESL (Spanish language) program that will be both funded and required so that the Hispanic population can be processed through the system when their cognitive English skill levels are adequate enough to succeed.

10. Provide and environment in the schools where violent and gang related students can be dealt with in a consistent manner. Rules for suspension vary far too much between systems and administrators?

How about increasing pay for teachers for all the hours and weekends, football games, social events like the prom and numerous other things that go along with teaching including seminars and professional growth obtained over the summer months??? Our pay for the most part has been frozen like a snowman forever?

We DO NOT NEED Merit Pay to make children learn more and better? That is like throwing Bailout monies at Banks who pass it along in bonuses to their CEO's? Virginia needs to teach to both the physical and environmental capabilities of the whole child while maintaining a safe school environmen, uniformly, throughout the state with the backing of FUNDS to match the new programs.

Bob MUST look to those of us who have spent are whole life (33 years in my case) into both children and education. The current state requirements are already driving the best, young, teachers to other professions?

Carol A.Silvestri, You have both fists, wrapped securely around the handle of reality, where the role of the players responsible for the education of our children are concerned.

I would like to add two things, the first being, I feel merit pay would work if based on tangible results and not the whims of local administrators.

Second in my 25 plus years as a vendor to school districts and individual schools, I witnessed an alarming number of unsuitable teachers being moved into the ranks of administrators as a result of "union protection". Unsuitability as a teacher should not, be a qualification for, nor open the door to administration.

In an "at will" environment you will find the better and more dedicated teachers rising to the pinnacle of their professional ability, while the unsuitable ones will not be rehired, or be on probation. The net effect will be to remove the blanket of mediocrity and failure that smothers the dedicated and caring teachers.
